LG Launches New Smart TV Apps Platform
LG Electronics today introduced its new Smart TV platform at the CES which carries apps, games and movies for the manufacturer’s latest TVs. Available through LG’s app store, TV apps from Hulu, Netflix and Vudu among others can be downloaded to the platform which also comes with LG’s “Magic Motion” motion detecting remote control.
“The move makes sense: Why partner with Google when you can build your own app store and capitalize on digital content sold through it? Plus, a TV company like LG probably has more amicable relationships with TV networks unlike Google, whose Google TV platform has been neutered by networks blocking access to their content.”
LG will also be offering the set-top Smart TV Upgrader box in Q2 this year, which will bring the flashy Smart TV UI to every TV with HDMI connectivity.
In previous LG news, we covered how LG as well as Samsung recently got their approvals for moving their production plants to China. Lower manufacturing costs seem even more noteworthy in light of the fact LG was one of the first to launch a Windows Phone 7 device, and that it plans to launch two updated versions of its tablets this year.
In addition to LG, we also covered where online video is standing at CES. We discussed the chance of a Windows alternative to Google TV, a possible launch of the new Xbox 360 social communication system dubbed Avatar Kinect and a new Iomega TV supporting Boxee + Storage.
