Women in tech, political speakers to tackle global terrorism at Inforum 2017
Infor Inc. started the Women’s Infor Network to knock down obstacles keeping women from reaching their full potential within the company. But WIN’s session at Inforum 2017 in New York tomorrow, titled “The Change Makers: Closing technology, societal and political gaps,” will go above and beyond its mission statement.
“The only WIN or female aspect of the session is that every speaker on stage is female,” said Pam Murphy (pictured), chief operating officer of Infor.
Speakers will delve into global issues well beyond women in tech, Murphy told Dave Vellante (@dvellante) and Rebecca Knight (@knightrm), co-hosts of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s mobile livestreaming studio. (* Disclosure below.)
The timely and pressing problem of global terrorism is among the main topics to be discussed. Diverse speakers will address the issue from different angles. Reshma Saujani, founder of Girls Who Code, and Tan Lee, founder of Emotiv Inc., a brain augmentation technology company, are set to speak. Susan Rice, former U.S. National Security Advisor to President Obama and ambassador to the United Nations; Farah Pandith, former special representative to Muslim communities for the U.S. Department of State; and Jill Biden, educator and wife of former U.S. Vice President Joe Biden, will offer their perspectives as well.
“We’re going to be talking about what lessons are we learning from what’s going on in Europe, and what is the role of technology in helping curb terrorism,” Murphy said.
WINing the battle
Though not a politician herself, Murphy would know about rallying forces to affect change on a somewhat smaller scale. About five years ago, she began WIN at the behest of her colleagues at Infor.
“As I traveled through the offices, people had been asking me a lot to create that forum,” she said.
WIN has revealed much to her about workplace conditions that might hamper equal opportunity, Murphy explained. “A lot of the time, I feel that it’s not conscious, if you will, and it just needs to be looked at,” she said.
Since its inception, WIN has helped generate about a 60-percent increase of female vice presidents and senior vice presidents within Infor, Murphy concluded.
