This open-source, multicloud serverless framework claims faster-than-bare-metal speed

The move toward fast, serverless computing technology got a boost this month from Iguazio Systems Ltd. The data platform company (named from the Iguazu waterfalls in South America) announced the release of Nuclio, an open-source, multicloud serverless framework that claims faster-than-bare-metal speed.

“We provide one platform, all the data services that Amazon has, or at least the ones that are interesting, serverless functions, which are 100 times faster, and a few more tricks that they don’t have,” said Yaron Haviv (pictured), founder and chief technology officer of Iguazio Systems. “We do fewer services, but each one kicks ass; each one is much faster and better engineered.”

Haviv spoke with John Furrier (@furrier), host of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s mobile livestreaming studio, and guest host Keith Townsend (@CTOAdvisor) during the AWS re:Invent event in Las Vegas, Nevada. They discussed Iguazio’s position relative to Amazon, serverless computing, and the evolution of smart services surrounding the core cloud. (* Disclosure below.)

Contrast with Amazon ‘supermarket’

With Amazon Web Services Inc. expected to introduce a company-record 1,300 new features by the end of this year, Iguazio’s “less-is-more” approach stands in direct contrast to the public cloud giant. “[Amazon CEO] Bezos thinks like a supermarket,” Haviv said. “Their strategy is to [provide] dozens of services that do similar things. I don’t think you need a thousand services to build a good cloud.”

The promise of service delivery through ultra-fast serverless functions by Iguazio highlights enterprise interest in a compute model where data ingestion, enrichment and analysis are accelerated. “Serverless means you don’t manage a server,” Haviv explained. “Essentially, it’s a packaged version of a cloud-native solution.”

Platform provider Iguazio’s rollout of Nuclio is another example of combined application delivery with the cloud experience close to sources of data. It exemplifies the development of smart services around the enterprise core cloud infrastructure.

“The way that we see the world, like Satya [Microsoft’s CEO Nadella], is there is a core cloud and a belt around it, which he calls the intelligent cloud,” Haviv said. “We would define ourselves as the intelligent cloud.”
