HackerRank raises $30M to bring code directly into the recruiting process

HackerRank Inc. offers an unconventional technical recruiting platform that can best be described as a mix of a hiring tool and a code editor. The startup’s unique feature set has won over 3.4 million developers worldwide, along with the support of several major investors.

The Palo Alto, California-based startup today announced the completion of a $30 million Series C funding round led by JMI Equity. The firm is notable for investing in major tech companies such as ServiceNow Inc. and DoubleClick Inc., the latter now a core pillar of Google LLC’s advertising business. JMI was joined in the round by Khosla Ventures, Battery Ventures, Randstad Innovation Fund and Chartline Capital Partners.

The cash infusion will help HackerRank build out its platform. The service uses machine learning to match enterprises with developers, database administrators and other technical professionals who possess the domain expertise they require. What sets HackerRank apart is a set of tools that enable organizations to put candidates’ skills to the test.

At the initial screening stage, a company can draw upon several thousand ready-made code challenges available on the platform to evaluate the programming prowess of each applicant. Enterprises with specialized requirements can also create their own challenges from scratch.

From there, a browser-based assessment tool makes it possible to check how well candidates handle coding tasks in a more controlled setting. The application combines videoconferencing features with a code editor that shows the user’s activity in real time. HackerRank said recruiters can view not just developers’ solution to an interview question, but also how they tackle errors and other important aspects of their work approach.

The startup’s platform has been adopted by more 1,000 organizations so far. Notable customers include Red Hat Inc., Cisco Systems Inc. and Zenefits Inc., to name a few. HackerRank has raised a total of $58.2 million in funding to date.
