Hybrid cloud, multicloud for hyperconverged infrastructure

As customers embrace the concept of a hyperconverged infrastructure for big data, the concept of a “metadata infrastructure” is becoming critical — and various types of cloud must be implemented in order to serve the massive amounts of data that just keeps growing and growing.

“Data is just becoming more critical,” said Peter McKay (pictured), co-chief executive officer and president of Veeam Software Inc. “It’s growing at an exponential rate. It is sprawling to all endpoints — the edge in IoT, it’s becoming a major issue. So just the sheer volume and growth and criticality of data is changing.”

McKay spoke with Stu Miniman (@stu), host of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s mobile livestreaming studio, and guest host Keith Townsend (@CTOAdvisor), principal at The CTO Advisor, during the Nutanix NEXT US event in New Orleans. They discussed the growing hybrid cloud and multicloud market. (* Disclosure below.)

Hybrid cloud and multicloud are growing

So why this massive expansion of data? As data grows, the need to back up and recover has come to the point where a company cannot go down for one moment, according to McKay. “That’s what we call availability — now hyper availability. It’s that market, the market is changing, and that’s why you see a lot of investment going in,” he said.

As companies move off legacy hardware, hybrid cloud and multicloud platforms become more and more crucial. “In every company that we go in, you have to go in and talk a multicloud story, especially when you’re backing up,” McKay said. “We believe that companies who want to back up in the cloud, or back up from the cloud, or back up between the cloud is critical for our customers.”

Because of the diversity of customers, Veeam has been able to navigate the world of cloud with overlapping technologies. “We became cloud agnostic over the past 11 years,” McKay said — although he did point out that Veeam is going deeper with certain companies out of necessity. “That’s what our customers are asking for.”
