Verizon iPhone 4 Grabbed 4.5% of the iPhone Market in 2 Weeks

millennial-media According to a recently released report by Millennial Media the Verizon iPhone has reached a significant portion of the market in just two weeks. The wireless carrier has proudly announced that their out-the-door sales mere hours after the debut of the phone also went extremely well, putting them on the map vs. AT&T who have had a huge lead.

Verizon is about 3 years behind AT&T in terms of offering the iPhone. Verizon said that it had a record first day of sales in the history of the company. “In just our first two hours, we had already sold more phones than any first day launch in our history. And, when you consider these initial orders were placed between the hours of 3 a.m. and 5 a.m., it is an incredible success story. It is gratifying to know that our customers responded so enthusiastically to this exclusive offer – designed to reward them for their loyalty.”

The device became generally available from Verizon on February 10.

Verizon accounted for 20% of all carrier impressions on Millennial’s network in February. That network reaches 90.3 million monthly users in the U.S.

Sales of the iPhone 4 by Verizon still went well even after expectations that it would have antenna problems (as it did with AT&T) and even after the wireless carrier announced the phone would not be up to 4G specs. Merely being able to get out from under AT&T’s thumb seemed to be a driving and acceptable force for most consumers—competition in the market spurred a noticeable growth in the total number of iPhones sold and even a rash of rumors of a lot of customers who might jump ship from one carrier to another just so that they could get onto the iPhone boat.

Other insights from Millennial Media’s monthly mobile advertising report also show the shifting sands of the mobile industry at work. Samsung, who had fallen a bit in the previous year, managed to claw their way back into the number two position amongst the top 15 manufacturers. Their tablet, the Galaxy Tab, appears as number 7 amongst the 30 top mobile devices as well as three of their other smartphones (Fascinate, Forte, and Captivate).

Android looks to be keeping the crown from Apple as well for the third consecutive month; its smartphone OS dominating the Millennial charts with 51% of the ad impression share.
