Permabit’s Latest Evolution of Albiero for Linux: CEO Interview

Permabit, a leading company in the development and delivery of Data Optimized Storage, has announced the next evolution of Albiero, the only embedded high performance OEM data optimization software. This update will be providing mainstream access to data optimization technology as well as expand the Primary Data Deduplication and Compression to standard Linux platforms.

Albiero Virtual Data Optimizer was developed to allow Linux Network Attached Storage (NAS) OEMs the ability to offer the real-time primary data deduplication, delivering breakthrough performance and scalability, just as large storage OEMs. And this update will help Linux-based Storage OEMs to Easily Embed Albireo High Performance Data Optimization Software into Block, File and Unified Storage Systems.

“Ever since our initial announcement of Albireo, the demand from our OEMs to implement data deduplication into their systems has been overwhelming. As the primary data optimization market has begun to mature, the Linux-based OEMs have realized that they need to implement this technology into their solutions as well, if they want to remain competitive in the storage market,” said Tom Cook, President and Chief Executive Officer, Permabit.

Taking a look at Linux-based NAS, we find that its market share has increased from 6.5% in 2006 to 17.9% in 2009, in terms of revenue. Moreover, with more big storage companies delivering primary storage deduplication in this year, the pressure on open source Linux storage OEMs has also increased. Luckily, Albiero VDO provides for the cost efficient storage solutions for block, file and unified storage platforms without having the need of any dedicated appliance.

Wikibon’s CEO, Dave Vellante today had a detailed conversation with Tom Cook, CEO & President of Permabit and Jered Floyd, Founder & CTO, Permabit. Take a look below, or here.

Permabit’s Albiero has been showing remarkable performance as well as revenue growth in the recently concluded Capacity Optimization ratio Effectiveness or CORE conducted by Wikibon. Here’s what Vellante had to say on Permabit’s Albiero,

“Interest among Wikibon users for primary storage optimization is exploding. To maximize ROI across the application portfolio, our belief is that primary optimization technologies should be embedded, have minimal application performance impacts and apply to both file and block storage. Permabit’s Albireo technology meets these criteria and has set a new bar for ROI. In our view it has the potential to redefine the landscape for primary storage optimization. ”

If you recall, back in December last year BlueArc and Permabit Technology also announced a partnership that was actually a long-term OEM partnership, with BlueArc utilizing Permabit’s Albireo technology specifically for its deduplication capabilities.  Such team-ups, while common in the cloud industry, continue to evolve this demanding business.
