Report: Apple will break up iTunes into multiple apps in next macOS release

A little over 18 years after its initial release, iTunes is now reportedly nearing the end of its run.

According to anonymous sources cited by 9To5Mac today, Apple Inc. is preparing to split up the Mac version of the iconic media store into multiple standalone applications. The update is expected to arrive with the next major release of macOS, which is reported to be on track for a June launch.

Apple will reportedly continue offering iTunes as an option alongside the new applications in order to accommodate users with older devices. However, the move would almost certainly lay the groundwork for an eventual shutdown given the platform’s already diminished role outside the Mac ecosystem. Apple stopped making iTunes a required download for mobile users back in 2011 and offers all its media services as standalone apps on iOS.

According to 9To5Mac’s sources, the planned revamp will see the company introduce new Music, Podcasts and TV applications for macOS. Apple is also said to be preparing a redesign for the existing Mac version of its Books service.

The latter upgrade will reportedly draw some inspiration from Apple News, which has also been available on macOS for a while now. The new Books application is expected to feature a category-sorted navigation sidebar that will organize books, audiobooks and titles the user has already purchased under separate tabs. There will reportedly also be an option to create custom collections.

Apple’s multimedia and content apps have taken on a central role in its growth strategy amid the slowing global demand for smartphones. In a push to open new revenue streams, the company last month rolled out a set of subscription-based news, TV streaming and gaming apps for iOS. It also unveiled a credit card developed in collaboration with Goldman Sachs Group Inc. that can link to a user’s iPhone.
