EMC Isilon Helps 3TIER Be Green
Information infrastructure giant EMC has announced that 3TIER, global leader in providing renewable energy information, data, assessment, and forecasting for wind, solar, and hydro power projects, is deploying EMC Isilon scaleout NAS as its primary storage platform for energy assessment and forecasting operations, simplifying big data management to increase application performance and reduce costs. SmartPool’s software application tightly integrated with Isilin allows 3TIER to have a single filesystem for multiple performance tiers for seamless, automated migration of between tiers while boosting operating efficiency.
3TIER’s former RAID array is incapable of scaling to meet the demands for the company’s big data, thus, complicating management and curbing the company in the same extent of consumers on top of soaring high costs. The company sees in Isilon a scalable storage solution that can consolidate and present to customers its big data which includes assessment and forecasting application in one share resource.
“Before Isilon, our team had to do everything from manual data migrations to mapping directory paths, which simply wasn’t sustainable for a business growing as quickly as ours,” continued English. “With Isilon, everything is simple. We’ve eliminated data management and storage headaches, freeing up resources to focus on the services that deliver real value to our clients.”
“3TIER is pioneering the use of scalable information systems to manage renewable energy risk, demonstrating yet another way in which big data is helping change the way we live, work and coexist on this planet,” said Sam Grocott, Vice President of Marketing at Isilon. “By using Isilon scale-out NAS to simplify big data management and make its own IT infrastructure significantly more efficient, 3TIER is demonstrating the game-changing benefits Isilon delivers for big data environments.”
Since the tiers are unified, 3TIER now has a single locus for management, running at one full-time equivalent (FTE). Moreover, Isilon’s pioneering “pay as you grow” architecture and over 80 percent storage utilization, as well allowing 3TIER to purchase storage that which is needed for the time being while the rest be bought as needed, is a flexible storage architecture that is sure to cut back capital costs and power, cooling and space requirements.
EMC has had some other interesting updates lately. Despite its apparent lack of focus over the past few years, it managed to increase its income by 28 percent, credited to satisfied customers and acquisitions that brought about the confidence of its investors. Beyond EMC’s most recent earnings report, VMware, a component of EMC, partnered with another team under EMC’s umbrella, Isilon, as well as Dell, to release a mobile clinical computing solution for hospitals and health care organizations. Apple also decided to do purchase 12 petabytes of storage from Isilon to manage video downloads of its iTunes customers.
