Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. has scheduled an “Unpacked” launch event for Aug. 7 that’s expected to feature the announcement of the Galaxy Note 10, the latest premium phone in the South Korean’s giant’s smartphone lineup.

Officially, the event in New York City, announced late Monday, will “unveil new devices designed to take the Galaxy ecosystem’s connectivity to the next level.”

The expected launch of the Galaxy Note 10 comes at a troubled time for the world’s largest smartphone manufacturer. After it launched the Galaxy S 10 and Galaxy Fold in February, the Fold ran into trouble when review units sent to YouTubers and tech sites started to break after a few days of use. Samsung delayed the launch of the phone and was last rumored to be relaunching it in June. It’s now July 1 and there’s still no sign of the phone.

On top of the issues with the Fold, Samsung overall has seen its profits tumble on weakening chip demand. More recently, it may be facing supply issues following a dispute between Japan and South Korea. Starting July 4, Japan will restrict the export of key components used in the manufacture of smartphones.

All those issues aside, there are high hopes for the Note 10. The Note line helped define what became known as phablets, although that segment of the market has all but ceased to exist given that standard phones continue to get bigger and bigger.

According to rumors and leaks, the Galaxy Note 10 will have two models: the standard Note 10 and what is reported to be called either the Note 10+ or the Note 10 Pro. Described by Tom’s Guide as large and extra-large, the two models respectively are said to offer 6.4-inch and 6.7-inch screens.

There’s also some suggestion that Samsung will also offer two 5G versions of the phones as well with identical specs to the base phones, aside from having a 5G modem.

The pro/plus version of the phone is rumored to have a 4,500-milliampere battery, with the base model coming with a smaller battery. Some reports suggest that the battery on the standard Galaxy Note 10 may come in at 3,400 mAh, the same battery found in the existing Galaxy S10.

The headphone jack is allegedly disappearing from the new phones, a feature that was still provided in the Note 9. Also, much to the dismay of Samsung fans, there’s rumored to be no SD card slot on the base Note 10 model.

Renderings of the phone show a center-hole-punch front-facing selfie camera, differentiating the Note 10 range from the S10s, which had a right-hand-side hole-punch selfie camera.

The Note 10 will not be cheap, though the line has always been Samsung’s most expensive, the suspended Galaxy Fold aside. The Note 9 retailed for $999, but with that being the standard price of a Galaxy S10 Plus, it’s speculated that the base Note 10 may come in at $1,099 or $1,199.
