WP7 Gains Market Share as Smartphones Still Dominate Connected Devices

When you belong to an exponentially booming industry, the tendency is that your revenues will skyrocket. This is what the mobile marketplace’s members are enjoying right now. The latest Millennial Media mobile report shows positive patterns of growth for the whole mobile space, focused on three vectors: device & manufacturer data, data OS and Q2 mobile developer trends.

From the manufacturer’s perspective, Apple seems to be immovable, occupying the top helm for a long time now with 30.76% market share. Runners up Samsung and RIM recorded 14.94% and 11.76% respectively.  The Apple iPhone is happily seated at the number one position in devices, with the Blackberry Curve and Motorola Droid completing the top three short list. The OS results showed that Android is unbeatable, riding a 7-month streak at the prime spot, this moth with 54% impression shares.

There are also 16 Android phones in the top 20 operating system-powered mobile phones, further emphasizing Android’s dominance in the mobile sector.  Smartphones also dominated the devices realm with a perfect 20 out of 20. These also outshone feature phones and connected devices such as the iPad. Perhaps one of the highest leapers for the last month in this year’s second quarter is Windows Phone 7, with impressions growth rate at 31% quarter-over-quarter. Going to the application platform portion, iOS and Android are still neck-on-neck battle with just 8% gap.

Meanwhile, the perpetrator of the study, Millennial Media, has its own share of the spotlight. Apple Inc. is rumoured to be seriously considering acquisition of this independent mobile advertising and data company as iAd experienced decline in number of clients even with price cuts offers.

The numbers speak not only of a present-day scenario, but of an industry that will continue to rule as mobile becomes one with society.
