Gluster Approaches Open Source Stardom with Latest Launch
Big data, storage, virtualization and the cloud all belong to the same circle that poses both challenges and opportunities to the industry. Emerging enterprises are very keen on developing solutions to mounting questions and demands, especially for the open cloud market. Known for their open source software network attached or NAS filesystem controlling the deployment of commodity hardware, Gluster has taken a step closer to being one of the premier providers in their field with the release of GlusterFS 3.3.
GlusterFS 3.3 features ability to access data simultaneously as an object and as a file, streamlining management process, less controlling storage cost and ease in migration.
In an official statement following the launch, Co-founder and CTO of Gluster AB Periasamy takes pride on how the enterprise has solved a long-term problem in the industry.
“Traditional object storage technologies have not been widely deployed because their approach has not integrated well with legacy applications – leaving 95 percent of those applications unable to easily migrate to the cloud. Additionally, NAS has been unable to scale across the Internet to the public cloud.
“GlusterFS 3.3 takes a unified approach via full integration of file and object storage within the file system. We are the first to solve both the NAS scaling and legacy application integration with object storage problems. We listen carefully to our customers and community and we are excited to deliver this next step of unified storage technology for virtual and cloud environments.”
In the last few months, Gluster has been very active in the game. Last March, the organization joined the OpenStack community and unlocked its doors for collaboration to provide scalability and high availability for users. Just before the first quarter ended, Gluster powered Sweden’s first IaaS platform. Keeping its momentum, they added supports to two new services and expanded its open cloud turf in less than 2 weeks.
This July, Gluster made serious efforts to become global leader when they added Rob Bearden of Hortonworks in their board. To round out their accomplishments so far this year, Gluster also announced partnership with Linux and offering Linux-based solutions. An open source platform for scale-out storage for public and private cloud, Gluster is harvesting praises in the industry and is said to be full of promise.
