Permabit Unveils Albireo API: Dedupe Everywhere
Permabit, the company behind the industry-leading Albireo OEM embedded deduplication software, announced a new API today that will be made available to partners.
The new API comes with a “Dedupe Everywhere” slogan, which is not too farfetched. Albireo can now be used in a much broader spectrum of deployments.
“Originally built to address all block, file, object and unified storage systems, Albireo has now expanded to uniquely integrate with any application, operating system or storage product, including new Solid State Drive (SSD) technology, within a vendor’s portfolio.”
Permabit promises cost efficiency as well, saying that Albireo can help reduce IT expenses and increase overall return on investment by optimizing data performance across the entire stack.
Permabit has gained itself a strong foothold with its offering thanks to its performance, which continues to increase as the company further strengthens its portfolio. In August, the company announced that Albireo’s dedupe speed has increased by a whopping 250 percent to 400GB/sec, compared to 77GB/sec in late 2011. This was recorded by the Enterprise Strategy Group Lab (ESG), and interestingly enough, even the previous result managed to easily beat the competition. EMC’s Data Domain DD890 offering runs at 4.08GB/sec, while ExGrid EX13000E can process 24 terabytes per hour in a 10-node grid. That pace is still behind the performance of a single Albireo node.
Prior to the news of this new record, Permabit added four new patents to its portfolio. US Patents No. 7,734,595, 7,747,583, 7,930,315 and 7,912,855 cover the reduction of bandwidth requirements using dedupe and a digital fingerprint; the retention of historical records in a data storage depository, and user communications.
Storage and data are the center of debate these days, and Permabit is making the most out of this trend, and subsequent demand.
