Android Rules over iOS in Smartphones and Connected Devices
Millennial Media released their Mobile Mix report for August 2011. The report, for the first time, combined connected devices and smartphones with regards to OS impression share. It’s an important inclusion for Millennial Media, indicating the growing importance of devices beyond the smartphone as mobile marketing takes shape.
The report features the Top 20 Mobile Phones with some phones appearing on the same ranking as other brands. Apple still tops overall device manufacturing at 23.19% and is leading the Top 20 chart at 13.06%. But HTC is hot on their trail as they reclaimed the number two position for the Top 15 manufacturers chart at 16.33% and they have 5 phones in the Top 20 chart for smartphones.
But it looks like Android is experiencing some stellar growth, as it is in the top spot for OS impressions with 54% market share, share followed by iOS with 28%. Android grew 2% month-over-month and represented 49% of the Application Platform Mix, with news applications on the Android growing 26% month-over-month. As far as Android impressions go, both phones and tablets grew 48% month-over-month.
When it comes to connecting all these devices, Wi-Fi network impressions were at the top of the list with 32%, and of that activity, 59% came from smartphones, leaving 34% for connected devices, which includes tablets, gaming devices, and eReaders.
In August of 2010, feature phones account for 33% of Millennial’s impressions, and that number has only continued to decrease into this year. Not surprising, considering smartphones have become more prominent than feature phones in today’s mobile market.
Games are still the number one preferred app category, and impressions grew 19% month-over-month, followed by music and entertainment, which grew 13% month-over-month. In the music and entertainment category, radio apps accounted for more than half of the impressions in Millennial’s network.
But the most surprising area of growth could be Windows Phone, as it increased 48% month-over-month. It seems like more people are interested in what Windows has to offer, hopeful that Microsoft’s mobile platform can bridge its web and mobile efforts now that it has Nokia by its side and a few years of studying iOS and Android to make a concerted move.
