Cloudera Teams-up with NetApp for Integrated Hadoop Offering
Hadoop service provider Cloudera and storage vendor NetApp debuted a new offering named the NetApp Open Solution for Hadoop, which will be available starting December this year. It’s a pre-configured modular Hadoop cluster that includes Cloudera’s Distribution including Apache Hadoop (CDH) and Cloudera Enterprise, a subscription-based support and management service.
The solution puts an emphasis on cost efficiency, which expresses itself in higher overall performance and add-ons, including self-healing technology, hardware RAID, and global spare drives, according to the two companies.
“By partnering with NetApp, customers now have more choices and the ability to deploy an open Hadoop solution with a leading storage vendor,” said Ed Albanese, head of Business Development for Cloudera. “We’re excited about the increasing diversity of architectures that enables Hadoop to be used in more places and deliver greater infrastructure efficiency, predictability, and simplicity.”
This announcement is the latest push on Cloudera’s end to get its product running on more companies’ IT infrastructure, and is a rather significant one. Last month the Hadoop distributor revealed a similar partnership with technical computing services company SGI. The latter has been selling pre-packed Hadoop stacks for quite a while now, and Cloudera’s Albanese even referred to the agreement as “a bit overdue.”
Cloudera is expanding its ecosystem to maintain the momentum it built up thanks to its head start in the enterprise Hadoop market, namely against emerging players such as Hortonworks, a VC-backed startup that was spun off from Yahoo. NetApp in turn is taking a similar route closer to its home turf.
It recently announced Broadcom’s converged network adapters (CNAs) have been certified in its Ethernet Advantage Program. The 10GbE FCoE solution delivers 1.7 I/Os per second, or about 80 percent faster than the second runner up, according to the company.
