Are You Guilty of These Facebook Follies? [Infographic]
Have you ever been submerged in internet culture long enough to notice that your cyber disposition kinda strays away from who you actually are? I have, and among the many places in the worldwide web that I display my somewhat bipolar personality is Facebook. Here’s an interesting mock Facebook page from College Humor (see infographic below) that speaks to some, if not all, of the absurdities people do on the world’s largest social networking site.
The first few claims on the page have already got me nodding. For example, when I read about “that one widescreen picture you had on your computer” for a cover, I feel like I just took an arrow to the knee. My profile cover is a field of sunflowers that I randomly saw online a couple of months back. Dumb nicknames used to be my staple as well, such as “Deckard Cain” and “Galileo Galilee.” Maybe I also posted a super dumb political opinion that is wrong and stupid in retrospect, but I can’t really remember. If I did, I hope it gets buried to the bottom of my Timeline so no one sees them.
I think there’s no one internet-savvy networker that doesn’t have a friend or two that he/she hasn’t seen in real life. I‘ve got a few and I do consider them friends. It’s amazing how the internet allows us to meet people halfway across the world. And embarrassing photos–who doesn’t have a few of those floating around Facebook, tagged or otherwise? Good thing mine were taken by close friends and I can always make a midnight call asking them to take the pictures down. I have to do that quite often all the more now that Timeline highlights one’s latest pictures in the flashiest way.
Speaking of the Facebook’s widely successful Timeline, it has got competitors interested. Salesforce.com was rumored to be planning for a Facebook-style timeline for the Chatter service. Then again, Facebook is not the kind of company to go stagnant after a few changes. They recently added a new feature to their array of services called “Listen With.” This feature will look like a chat sidebar that will indicate who among your friends are listening to music by putting a music note beside it. Hover over the name and click “Listen With,” and you’ll be redirected to a page that plays the music. There’s a chatbox inside that allows listeners to talk about their thoughts of the music. However, it is said that the new addition has become yet another source of privacy issues for the users.
Being the most massive social network today, Facebook’s also got a lot of piggybacking from third-party developers, especially in the mobile scene. Just a couple of days after the FB timeline were rolled out, a few apps have already leveraged around it— including an Android app by D33P that creates Timeline cover photos on the fly.
