QLogic Lands Major Win in Storage with HP and Dell Deals

QLogic announced some very good news this week – it has been selected  to provide networking gear that will ship with two of the most buzzed-about products in the storage industry today.

The first release covers the ProLiant Generation 8; what has been named by a senior Wikibon analyst as the best server HP launched to date, thanks to the sheer amount of overall improvements and automation it introduces to the datacenter. Gen8 is officially shipping with QLogic  8Gb Fibre Channel tech inside, in the form of the HP BLc QMH2572. The company says that the customized solution is one of the first Fibre Channel mezzanine adapters the industry, and that it has specifically been optimized for the I Xeon chips that power the box.

“The HP BLc QMH2572 delivers superior application performance per port across real-world block sizes and is optimized for low-power usage, management and security.

“This powerful SAN solution can increase transfer rates for mission-critical data center applications and reduce backup windows.  In addition, the fault-tolerant 8Gb Fibre Channel architecture and extended virtualization capabilities allow organizations to support higher virtualization densities, optimize server utilization rates and achieve new levels of flexibility with significant power and cooling savings.”

QLogic hardware will also be loaded into the direct competitor of Gen8, Dell’s 12th generation PowerEdge servers. The 8200 Series 10GbE CNAs provided by the networking gear maker will be leveraged to optimize cost efficiency and bandwidth allocation in virtualization-driven environments. (On a side note, the two competitors’ servers happen to run on the same Intel processors. The chipmaker acquired QLogic’s InfiniBand unit for $125M a couple months ago).

These two agreements with HP and Dell put QLogic in a very good position, considering how many units each hardware titan is likely to ship on the long run.
