1DollarScan Launches Fine Tune Digital Service for Mobile Devices

1DollarScan, the digital scanning service that lets you digitize your books, documents, greeting cards, photos, etc. for just one dollar, is ramping up its product line as digital publishing gains traction (Pottermore, anyone?)  Today the company unveiled Fine Tune technology for eReader and mobile devices.

The new patent-pending technology offers higher resolution and high quality digitally scanned color content for viewing PDF files on any eReader and mobile device. Users can now access and read digital content such as printed books, magazines, business cards, documents, photos, etc. on any mobile device or laptop anytime, anywhere.

The Fine Tune technology lets you view PDF files much faster on the iPhone, iPad, Android, Barnes & Noble Nook, Amazon Kindle and Sony Readers, and the list goes on.

The San Jose-based 1DollarScan is a Japanese company operated by zLibro, Inc., an affiliate of BookScan Japan, one of the largest digital scanning services in the country.

1DollarScan aims to provide the most affordable content scanning service to users with pricing starts at $1 for up to 100 pages. Besides low prices, the software developed by the firm can process information faster than popular competitors like OCR or Adobe.

“Our success in Japan helps position us well to lead the U.S. growth of digitally scanned content for any consumer or business,” said Hiroshi Nakano, CEO of 1DollarScan. “Our advanced scanning and operations software enables us to deliver the fastest, highest quality, and most affordable digital scanning service in the world.”

Digital Publishing is Paying Off

According to a report from the Association of American Publishers, in 2010 U.S. sales of paper books reached more than 2.57 billion, and people want many of their paper books to be digitized and available on their mobile devices.

The e-book market is growing at an amazing rate. According to Philip Jones, deputy editor of trade magazine The Bookseller, e-book sales have been increased by 500 percent in 2011, and the trend will only continue in coming years.

One popular example is Harry Potter, who’s books are available in digitized version, and each title of the Harry Potter series is now available for e-readers, smartphones, tablets, and computers. Barnes & Noble Nook, Sony Readers, Amazon Kindle and Google’s Android-based smartphones are the platforms where users can access and read the e-books, emphasizing a cross platform and device strategy that ensures the Potter brand’s accessibility and reach.  This is something 1DollarScan is striving for, competing on price as well as technology.

“We have a treat team and have both iOS and Android apps,” Nakano explains.  “We’re always improving our technical points.  We’ve been discussing HTML5 for a while, and we’re still thinking about this for tablets and other devices.  We will implement HTML5 in the future–that is our plan.”

Encyclopaedia Britannica also recently announced that the print edition of its flagship encyclopedia will be soon digitized. The digital versions of the encyclopaedia will be available through mobile platforms such as iPad and Kindle.

There are lots of companies offering digital textbooks like CourseSmart, Kno, Inkling, and Amazon. Apple’s interest in revolutionizing textbooks got a second wind when they launched iBooks 2, iBooks Author and iBooks Textbooks, spurring the entire community to step up their digital publishing efforts.
