If you’re in the mobile space and you’re not paying attention to Android, you’re not doing your job. [Warning: there’s going to be a lot of numbers thrown at you here.  I’ll try to make sense of it all in plain English towards the end. –mrh] About a week ago one of our sponsors, Millennial ...

Ooyala: We’re All Set To Deliver Video On The iPad

Robin Wauters at Techcrunch has some seemingly good news from one of my favorite video startups, Ooyala: Just because the iPad won’t support Flash doesn’t mean that you won’t be able to watch any videos on the highly anticipated Apple device. Video platform company Ooyala, for one, this morning said it will support full video ...

WiMax is Dead? Not Hardly: Clear Expanding Coverage to 120 Million by End of 2010

A lot of digital ink has been slain in the coverage of Cisco’s ongoing war to kill the WiMax standard in favor of the LTE standard. In the end, the topic is ultimately esoteric in light of the mainstream’s understanding of what the wireless broadband space options actually are: cheap and solid or expensive and ...

CheapTweet: The Act of Dealhunting isn’t Sexy, But it is Effective

Hayes Davis (and Jenn) are working this year on a project called CheapTweet (and a site called TweetReach).  The big news from Austin was the launch of CheapTweet 2.0. The site just went through a major rebranding effort prior to SxSW, and crossed a milestone threshold, having indexed its five millionth deal. The new feature ...

The Austin-American Statesmans’ Texas Social Media Awards and Transitioning from Heritage Media to New Media [#TSMA, #SxSWi]

One of the many cool things that happened down in Austin this year was that I got a chance to win a “Texas Social Media Award.” In general, I’m not a fan of pointless awards to celebrate arbitrary career or avocation accomplishments. They always tend to conjure up, in my mind at least, the silly ...

Phonebooth.com: The Google Voice of Hosted PBX’s [#SxSWi]

I’ve been lucky enough to meet with a swath of companies this year, almost all of which excite me on various levels. One of the more interesting infrastructure conversations I’ve had is with a company called Bandwidth.com, who this year in Austin launched a new service over at Phonebooth.com. The service, like much in the ...

What the Heck is Cyber-Anthropology [#SxSWi]

Cyber-anthropology. What? That was just about my reaction as well.  I met Diana Martin in the SxSWi Bloggers Lounge early Saturday morning, who is a UX (user-experience) specialist at The Planet (a large web host local to Dallas).  As we at that particular table were sipping our wake-up juice and making our introductions and card ...

Why SxSW Doesn’t Suck

Like many of you, I woke up yesterday to a bitter post on Jolie O’Dell’s personal blog entitled “Why SxSW Sucks,” which has acted as some sort of magnet for many of the non-attendees of SxSW to unload their sour grapes sentiments about being unable to attend the festival. I had initially planned to respond ...

Starting this Friday: The Cube, Broadcasting Live from Austin [SxSWi]

In case you haven’t heard, there’s a little gathering of geeks taking place in my home state, starting this week, called South by Southwest. Naturally I’ll be down there attempting to bring relevance from the chaos which generally is that event. I’ll be assisted by Michael Sean Wright, Robert Scoble, Leo Laporte and a cast ...

Rent-a-Friend: In Search of a Cultural Scapegoat

A friend of Art and I, Dr. Melissa Clothier, put a post up on her blog today talking about an interesting trend in society fueled in part by social media and our ever splintering layers of technology: Rent-a-friends: This Rent-A-Friend concept is intriguing. So rather than fussing with some person with a boring, involved life-story, ...
