My Problem with the Modern Network Neutrality Debate

Generally I find the topic of Network Neutrality to be cumbersome and energy draining, but two weeks in a row, I’ve listened to TWiT give the other side of the argument a half-hearted treatment, and Jason Calacanis this week simply pleaded with the listeners for 15 minutes to go write their congressman to vote for ...

Why I Continue to Use Google Reader

Fellow SiliconANGLE contributor Robert Scoble put out a post on one of his blogs today detailing why he doesn’t use Google Reader anymore. There hasn’t been much response yet, but as an avid user of Google Reader, an already underappreciated tool for gathering large amounts of data and consuming it efficiently, I thought it necessary ...

Gizmodo notes incredulously: Chrome OS is released. The post, for whatever reason, is not online anymore, but was made just a few hours ago this morning. Here are the specs from the official Google download page: 2009-10-21: New Chrome OS 0.4.223 beta is available now! Chrome OS is a brand new free operating system built ...

The Potential of StatusNet Properly Explained [Federated Microblogging]

I just read a train-wreck of a post over at Techcrunch on the funding that StatusNet just received.  In terms of getting just the facts across, it accomplishes the job. StatusNet, the company behind federated Twitter clone Identi.ca, received $875,000 in seed funding. Aside from that, Erick’s analysis displayed a shocking lack of insight on ...

Wearable Computers and Augmented Reality Could be Closer than You Think

It’s been a minute since we’ve talked a bit about augmented reality here at SiliconANGLE.  For a while there, like a flash in a pan, there was a glut of news on the topic.  Almost as quickly as it surfaced, compelling augmented reality news died down a bit. Part of the reason for that is ...

If They Build a 15’ Wall, Bring a 20’ Ladder [anti-censorware]

Cord Blumquist put out a post over at Tech Liberation Front that detailed the latest in WordPress-related anti-censorware gear: TextImage and Censortive, two plugins compatible with the most current versions of WordPress, are ingenious little bits of programming for skirting around the “Great Firewall” and any other attempts to censor the Net.  The two plugins ...

End of an Era: XKCD Commemorates Geocities Closed Down.

There really isn’t a lot to say on the topic (unless I were to wax philosophical on the transient nature of data on the web) about the impending closure of Geocities. Those of us who were around in the mid-90s either remember those days fondly or are still trying to scrub the scads of bad ...

Presenting: The New Dialtone (a Documentary Series)

Frequent SiliconANGLE LA contributor Michael Sean Wright walked around BlogWorldExpo with eGuiders founder Marc Ostrick with SA contributor and Building43 founder Robert Scoble last week. Originally posted up at eGuiders, Michael and Mark’s documentary is both artful and impressive.  The new dial tone is a dialog between media producers, technologists and bloggers who are looking ...

What Bing and Google’s Twitter Firehose Usage Could Mean for Newsprint

Of course, the big news of last evening was that Bing and Google are paying for access to Twitter’s firehose.  If you didn’t get it by now, this is the final shred of validation that Twitter needs to convince the world of it’s relevancy.  If only they could keep their servers online consistently, they’d be ...

It’s a big day for Twitter. Following the Bing-Twitter announcement, Google’s Marissa Mayer issued a similar annoucement via the Google blog. Given this new type of information and its value to search, we are very excited to announce that we have reached an agreement with Twitter to include their updates in our search results. We ...
